Individual Rights

Each of us has certain individual rights which allow us to act independently, and to get the most out of the communities in which we live.  This is no less true for those with developmental disabilities. At CSC, providing opportunities for those we support to exercise their individual rights is viewed as one of our significant responsibilities.

When CSC implemented a voter registration drive for the individuals we support, we were helping to ensure that each individual could express one of their most fundamental rights- the right to help choose those who would make decisions that would likely impact on the individual’s life.  When another individual wanted to exercise his right to drive a car, CSC staff helped him obtain the materials needed for him to study for the driver’s test.  The fundamental right to worship as one wishes is also recognized by staff as one of the rights that they have a responsibility to help the individual exercise.

Assisting those we support to fully exercise the rights to which they are entitled requires a commitment by CSC staff to search for these opportunities and to provide the supports necessary for them to take advantage of these opportunities.
